The Cisco High-Density Packet Voice Digital Signal Processor Module, known as the PVDM2, is a critical component designed to enhance Cisco Integrated Services Routers. It enables these routers to deliver high-density voice connectivity, conferencing, and transcoding capabilities within Cisco IP Communications solutions. By bridging the gap between traditional telephony equipment—such as PBXs, analog phones, and fax machines—and modern IP networks, the PVDM2 facilitates a smooth transition to the Cisco Unified Communication Architecture.
This module serves as a vital tool for enterprises and service providers looking to optimize their voice, video, and data integration. By providing robust processing power and flexible deployment options, the PVDM2 ensures that organizations can maintain high-quality communication standards while scaling their infrastructure to meet growing demands.
Product overview
The PVDM2 series is available in five distinct versions to accommodate varying density requirements: PVDM2-8, PVDM2-16, PVDM2-32, PVDM2-48, and PVDM2-64. Each model is identified by its maximum channel density when using the G.711 codec, offering a scalable range of support for different voice and fax applications. These modules are field-insertable and connect to host devices via 80-pin SIMM slots, ensuring ease of installation and maintenance.
Beyond simple connectivity, these modules are engineered to support a wide array of codecs, including both high-complexity options like G.729 and iLBC, and medium-complexity options like G.711 and G.726. The hardware is built on high-performance Texas Instruments DSP technology, providing the necessary processing power and memory to handle complex voice tasks efficiently. Additionally, for newer platforms like the Cisco 2900 and 3900 series, a specific adapter (PVDM2-ADPTR) is available to ensure compatibility with the PVDM2 modules.
Features and benefits
- Investment Protection: The modules are field-upgradable and can be reused across different Cisco Integrated Services Routers and voice network modules, allowing for flexible resource allocation.
- High Density and Flexibility: Each DSP provides significant processing power, enabling high call density and efficient channel allocation, particularly for G.711-based solutions.
- Conferencing and Transcoding: The PVDM2 supports universal transcoding, allowing for seamless conversion between various supported codecs, alongside robust conferencing capabilities.
- Enhanced Voice Quality: The modules perform essential functions such as voice activity detection, jitter management, and echo cancellation (compliant with ITU-T G.168 with a 64ms tail length) to ensure clear communication.
- Scalability: The modular design allows businesses to easily scale their voice deployments as their organizational needs grow.
- Broad Compatibility: The PVDM2 series is compatible with a wide range of Cisco platforms, including the 2800, 2900, 3800, and 3900 series routers, as well as various high-density digital voice network modules.
